The Adventurer Story (History)

In 1979 a significant shift occurred in the Youth Department of the General Conference. The recognized logos for the MV (Missionary Volunteers) and JMV (Junior Missionary Volunteers) were changed to AY (Adventist Youth) and AJY (Adventist Junior Youth). Thus for the little ones, the pre-JMV was changed to pre-AJY and then to Adventurers. The Adventurer Club was first voted into official existence by the world church in 1989.

This change was simple for some but for others it was not easy. In some areas of the world church additional curricula were introduced expanding the program from 6-9 year olds to include the 5 year olds. The North American division adopted the name of Eager Beavers for the 5 year olds. In Brazil they called their program Blue Dolphins; in Peru they were called Snails. In Southern Africa, the name adopted for this group. In some areas these children are incorporated into the Adventurer Club but they have their own scarf, but instead of a sash and awards they use chips (a set of patches attached to the scarf). But the world Youth Advisory held in 2001 voted that this program (for the 5 year olds) would not be considered official for the world church.

In 1989 the Adventurer program was revised and accepted including 46 awards. The maroon scarf replaced the orange scarf in most Division, and the new logo was introduced. In 1991 the new Administrative Manual, Awards Manual and Awards poster were produced by the GC. In 1998 the Adventurer slide was changed to the new embroidered cloth slide. In 2000 the church Manual specified the role of the Adventurer director in the church board.

The previous and current GC Adventurer leaders: Malcom Allen, 1989-1996; Robert Holbrook, 1997-2005; Jonathan Tejel, 2005.
