No intelligence, no one to guide them, no map, no compass; so how is it that insects manage to find their way around? The exploring bee lives to fi nd places with abundant fl owers; its mission is to locate a good source of nectar, return to its hive and tell all the others where it’s been. To do that, it must travel many kilometers. Its only guide is the sun and its position in relation to the earth.
The dragonfly uses its vision to find its way. It takes advantage of some 28 thousand tiny lenses that give it 360 degree viewing. It can see behind in front and to both sides all at the same time. It’s not as sharp as human vision, but it works well enough. Since it is a territorial insect, it determines objects that outline its “property.” Its frontiers may be indicated by a tree or a large rock and since it sees every direction simultaneously, it can keep trespassing dragonfl ies out. And, how about those ants—they guide themselves by smell. As they stroll along, they leave behind tiny scent marks and then use the 10th of the 12 segments of their antennae to smell their own trail back home again. Should they somehow loose track of that scent, they’re doomed.
You and I also have a means of keeping oriented in this world on our road back home—God’s home. It’s the Bible. It is a revelation of God made by God himself.
